Experience

When I started Move Up Faster, I had a simple goal: to give ambitious digital marketers like you the kind of guidance I wish I'd had when I began my career 30 years ago. No fluff, no ego, no empty hustle – just hard-earned insights to help you develop your career with more clarity.

Fifty newsletters later, it’s time to hit pause.

This project has been one of the most fulfilling things I’ve done. It’s been so rewarding to be of service to you. Hearing from so many of you – whether you landed a new role, helped a client campaign get better, nailed a tough conversation, or just saw your path a little clearer – has been like rocket fuel for me every week. Thank you.

Reflection

The core of Move Up Faster was never about hacks or shortcuts. It was always about helping you to:

  • Own your trajectory.

  • Invest in your career just like you would in an ad campaign

  • Think like an operator, not just an executor.

  • Invest in judgment, not just skills.

  • Make yourself valuable, then visible.

  • Play long games in short-term worlds.

These principles haven’t changed. And I’m not done exploring them. I’m just giving the newsletter format a rest while I figure out what the next evolution of this project might look like. But that doesn’t mean I’m going to leave you without any actions for this week.

Action

Step 1 – Get Out of Your Comfort Zone. What is one skill that you need to lean into between now and EOY? Can you reflect? Ask your colleagues or your manager? Identify one thing to get better at.

Step 2 – Learn a New Skill. How can you acquire that skill? Watch youtube videos? Take a course? Ask a mentor?

Step 3 – Add Value. How will that new skill create more value? Will it help you do what you do - faster? Will you save money for the firm that pays you? Or help you manage people better?.

Step 4 – Move Up Faster. This new skill should be something that you can add as a ‘badge’ to your next performance review. A step on the ladder to get you promoted to a new role - that new skill serves a purpose, of moving you up, faster.

(By the way, these four steps make up my Return on Marketing Career (RoMC) framework—more on that here.)

Thank you for reading, sharing, replying, and most of all: doing the work. That’s always been the point.

I'll be back with something new when it feels right.

Until then: stay sharp, move up, and be good to yourself. And please share these newsletters with anyone you think might appreciate them.
